OPINION WRITING
There are two parts, or bends, to this Lucy Calkin's unit. In Bend I, students read articles and watch videos about a topic that many students enjoy and care about, whether or not children should drink chocolate milk. Students gather facts for both sides, choose a side, and then begin to put their draft together. Throughout the process, students learn how to write a powerful introductory paragraph, the importance of not only giving evidence to support their claim but also the importance of interpreting their evidence. In Bend II of this unit, students will be going through the same process as before, looking at a controversial topic of their choice! In this bend, we expand on what was previously taught, and students are now asked to include a counterclaim and rebuttal to their writing.
